The Perfect in South Walton Awards, now in its sixth year, are both nominated and voted on by the public, allowing both visitors and residents to recognize their favorite local restaurants, businesses and events in a variety of categories.
“The best part about the Perfect in South Walton Awards is that it creates another moment for our visitors and locals to remember the people and experiences that make South Walton special,” says Visit South Walton Director of Marketing and Communications David Demarest. “When they spend time thinking about their favorite memories, it won’t be long before they’re back to visit and support local business.”
Kurt Lischka, founder of SoWal.com, won the honor again for Best Beach Photographer. Kurt founded SoWal in 2003 as a platform to spread the word about the world’s most beautiful beaches and has shared thousands of South Walton photographs online and in print for several decades.
“It’s such an honor to win again and to have people vote for me makes it very special. South Walton has a lot of fans and I love sharing the beach with them every day,” Kurt said. “I’m dedicating the award to Moon Creek Studios’ employee Molly Parker who passed away last December. She was a huge part of our success and establishing our gallery in Grayton Beach. She was part of our SoWal family and is missed every day.”
Most homes in Rosemary Beach are based on island architecture with traditional features. Original town architect Richard Gibbs told me he only allowed natural materials like wood and metal because everything about the town should develop a patina. And for that I’m grateful, even if constant maintenance and replacement has to happen.
This cool modern home on the north side of Scenic 30A stands out among the typical Rosemary Beach homes. It’s sleek and modern and cool. 20 East Water Street is not typical, but it is still classic Rosemary Beach.
We have great events in South Walton and I have enjoyed documenting nearly all of them for more than a decade. The Harvest Wine & food Festival is relatively new and in a beautiful spot in WaterColor’s Cerulean Park.
I love spending time outdoors and could spend a whole lifetime taking photos of wildlife. It takes patience and most of the shots I get are just lucky since I don’t have as much time outdoors as I would like.
Coyotes, foxes, deer, turtles, raccoons, alligators, dolphin, rays, and even manatees can be spotted in SoWal. The easiest wildlife to spot are the birds that are everywhere all the time. Shore birds are fun to see and seem very unusual if you don’t live at the beach. Herons and pelicans are fascinating to watch as they interact with the environment. People say pelicans aren’t so pretty but watching them glide in formation inches over the waves is one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see.
We have black bears and getting a photo of one in the dunes would be the ultimate South Walton wildlife pic in my book. If you’re lucky you’ll spot a bald eagle or tow, usually in the less developed areas and around our coastal dune lakes. The occasional alligator in the surf is also a wow moment! The bull gators get a little crazy in mating season and sometimes wander into the surf.
The owner designed his home in Seacrest with personal sketches and inspiration from decades of travel. Gracing the structure are amazing art pieces and artifacts from across the globe. Some of the home’s features were created to complement the art.

It was an adventure photographing this amazing lakefront home in Blue Mountain Beach. It is a modern home built for entertaining.
The setting is in the heart of South Walton on a private 1.58 acre Oasis with 211 feet of waterfront and unobstructed panoramic gulf views on Redfish Lake, one of our rare Coastal Dune Lakes.
The home was designed by architect Dan Mueller and built by Kyle Bengston in 2011 and has 5 bedrooms, 3 full baths, and 3 half baths. Enter the impressive foyer that flows seamlessly to the expansive living room, bar and entertaining area, and into the award winning gourmet kitchen with Neff custom cabinets and a full caterer’s pantry and grilling porch. The first floor master wing features his and her full bathroom areas, coffee and beverage bar, gas fireplace, authentic Japanese soaking tub, private dressing areas and oversized walk-in closets with separate entry for staff.
There is a private guest wing on the first floor in addition to an acoustically designed media room.
A private elevator or beautiful custom built staircase brings you to the second level of the home with three bedrooms and adjoining balconies.
Equally as impressive as the home itself, the outdoor space and natural surroundings are breathtaking. The outdoor area offers a gorgeous four-sided private infinity pool, top of the line hot tub, recently upgraded private lakefront dock, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, and covered alfresco dining area.
The home offers a 3-car garage, two driveway entrances and parking for up to 30 vehicles on the expansive driveway. This waterfront sanctuary has countless upgrades; Chad Horton Landscaping, water filtration system, circular driveway, tankless hot water heater, whole house generator, 2 refrigerators, 3 dishwashers, 3 freezers, 4 ice makers, and air conditioned storage rooms to name a few. Enjoy Red Fish Lake, the Gulf, 30-A’s 19-mile bike path, shopping and dining right outside your door.
There’s a new gallery in Grayton Beach, Florida that features the fine art photography of Kurt Lischka.
Kurt has been capturing the beauty of the South Walton for more than three decades, sharing thousands of images online since founding Moon Creek Studios in 1998, and SoWal.com in 2004.
“Like many people I’ve been drawn to the shore my entire life. The patterns, textures, and rhythms of the beach thrill me,” said Lischka.
Inside the gallery is a wide range of photos that represent the beach life – waves, sunsets, dunes, flora, wildlife, environmentally sensitive landscapes and South Walton’s rare coastal dune lakes. Gracing the walls also are abstact images that capture the interesting details and emotion of coastal life.
Images in the gallery are printed on fine art paper, canvas, metal, and wood and presented in a variety of ways including traditional frames, tapestries, and unique table top metal prints on unique driftwood stands. Also for sale are notecards, postcards and other gift items. There is also SoWal logo gear on hand such as T-shirts, hats and other items.
The Heritage Series is comprised of images on fine-art canvas framed in heritage wood.
“Each of our heritage wood frames is handcrafted from select planks milled from massive cypress logs, lost for more than a century at the bottom of the Choctawhatchee River right here in Walton County,” said Lischka.
Moon Creek gallery hours are 10am to 4 pm weekdays, or by appointment, 1414 Co Road 283 South, Grayton Plaza, Grayton Beach, Florida. Call 850-231-0102.
